Does Prince2 or PMP certification increase your salary?
Yes — but the premium varies. Prince2 is widely recognised in the UK public sector and adds credibility at junior and mid levels, typically adding £2,000 to £5,000 to market value. PMP certification from the Project Management Institute carries more weight in the private sector and internationally, and tends to command a larger premium of £5,000 to £10,000 at senior levels. Agile and Scrum certifications are increasingly expected rather than differentiating in technology roles.
Key insight: Project managers who can demonstrate delivery of large, complex programmes — particularly those involving significant budgets or cross-functional teams — earn considerably more than those with equivalent years of experience but smaller project scope.
Freelance project manager day rates
Experienced project managers who go freelance can often earn more than their employed equivalents once they factor in the day rate uplift. Senior freelance PMs in London typically charge £450 to £700 per day. Outside London, £300 to £500 per day is more common. Use our day rate calculator to work out what rate you should be charging.
